OTOPLASTY (CAULIFLOWER EARS AESTHETICS)
The surgical operations that are performed on ears are mostly the operations that aim to fix the cauliflower ears look. Otoplasty is a commonly recommended operation in order to fix the looks of ears which completes the aesthetic look of our faces, being excessively big innately or as a result of a trauma or extended sideways in a cauliflower fashion.
When is otoplasty necessary?
Since cauliflower ears are almost entirely innate, this causes children with such condition to be mocked by their peers resulting in affecting their childhood adversely. Regarding this, we recommend the operation for children that are turned six years of age and completed most of their development, right before the elementary school as the ideal timeframe.
How is otoplasty performed?
Otoplasty is mostly performed with general anaesthesia. In case patient demands or a unique case happens local anaesthesia may be preferred. The operation takes 45-60 minutes on average. With a 3 cm cut behind the ear the cauliflower ear is fixed. Post-otoplasty, ears get the desired shape. Recovery period takes 1 or 2 weeks. No permanent operational scar remains.
Are bandages required post-surgery?
Head bandage (or tennis player bandage) is recommended post-surgery. It should be used full time for the first ten days then on at nights for another ten days. Bandage usage is significant for patient’s comfort and the safety of the surgery area.
Caution: Share with you doctor all your currently prescribed medicine and, if having, your habits such as smoking or alcohol usage, because it should not be forgotten that some medicine may increase the risk of bleeding, prolonging bad habits may cause infection and effect the curing process at a significant level.
